SENIOR APPLICATION DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR – L5
Role Summary
The position is part of the Enterprise Systems Team within Canada IT Group. Reporting to the Senior Manager of the Data Architecture & Design Team. The Application Database Administrator is responsible for the database administration and operations, logical and physical design / architecture, security, installation / deployment, configuration, standards and process development of various Applications.

This position requires superior technical skills acquired through formal education and practical work experience.
Excellent communication skills and extensive interaction with various stakeholders, - both technical and non-technical, including management & end users, technical development teams, operations staff and other application DBAs, are required.
Proven technical hands-on experience and expertise in SQL Server and Oracle.
Extensive hands-on experience with various database design, management, and monitoring tools across platforms (i.e. Sun Solaris and Windows NT/2000/XP) is highly desirable.
As a senior technical staff, this candidate must be able to effectively manage concurrent projects and activities.
Additionally, the incumbent should have working knowledge and practical experience in:
· Internet Technologies such as: Java, Javascript, XML, HTML, EJB, ASP,JSP
· Microsoft MCSE certification is desirable
· Experience in implementation, configuration, upgrades and administration of SQL Server 2000 on WinNT/2000/2003 platforms
· Experience in WindowsScriptHost (WSH), and VB scripting Knowledge of SQL Server internals mandatory
· Experience with DTS imports/exports
· Experience with SQL Server complete, differential, and transaction log backups
· Working experience with 3rd party database tools or SQL Server Enterprise Manager, and Query Analyzer
· Experience with Oracle Database Administration is desirable
· Strong interpersonal skills
· Strong analytical and technical trouble-shooting skills
· Strong verbal and written communication skills is essential
· Knowledge of Network Topologies is a definite asset.
· Experience in troubleshooting database configuration issues with Documentum document management system
Experience in troubleshooting database configuration issues with Web Application Servers such Oracle AIS, Websphere Portal or Microsoft Sharepoint Portal
Responsibilities
Database Design, Architecture and Administration
· Manage & monitor SQL Server / Oracle databases in production and development environments in accordance with the current Service Level Agreement
· Ensure database security and integrity are maintained in all environments
· Optimize database architecture / environments and develop standard-based management processes & documentation
· Perform database space management, performance tuning and optimization of database design in an proactive manner
· Conduct database sizing and capacity planning for development, testing and production environments
· Consult / determine / implement database problem resolutions
· Establish and manage centralized repositories for corporate and subject area data models, meta data and database objects
· Consult & support development teams on SQL Server / Oracle database design
· Compile and report database performance to determine and maintain the health of the SQL Server / Oracle databases in various environments
· Support, administer and maintain SQL Server-2000 environments running on WinNT/2000/2003 platforms
· Responsible for maintaining defined day to day operating procedures for SQL-Server databases
· Support development effort by providing Transact-SQL statement tuning, and optimum data loading techniques
· Trouble-shoot database problems as required
· Setup procedures to refresh databases environments using DTS
· Planning, installing, and upgrading SQL Server binaries and instances
· Allocating system storage for optimum I/O
· Provide planning for future storage requirements for SQL Server databases
· Providing and implementing optimum physical database design.
· Providing schema management for objects such tables, views,
indexes etc, and ensuring they met internal database standards
· Modifying database structures based on directives from internal
Sr. DBA and/or application developers
· Enrolling users and maintaining system security; account management
· Controlling and monitoring user access to the database
· Provide some instance level performance monitoring and tuning
· Plan/rehearse database recovery plans
· Configuring/trouble-shooting SQL Server Client Network Utility communication software
Database Management Standards and Procedures
· Define standards for development, testing and production database environments to ensure database operations efficiency and consistency
· Establish flexible and secure development, administrative and support procedures for various database environments
· Define database migration and promotion methodology between environments, namely development, testing and production
· Enforce and automate database standards and processes
· Define database security plan and identify audit requirements
· Define / execute processes to establish database architecture and capacity planning mechanism
· Define and implement database monitoring processes to identify and prevent potential database problems
Project and Time Management
· Develop and execute project plans, and /or participate in defining specific tasks / activities in complex projects
· Coordinate and manage the database environments to support multiple concurrent projects / activities
